Matt is in our clinical team and is a qualified Counsellor. Matt is a caring, empathetic and down to earth person who is passionate about helping other people in a variety of ways. Whether it is mental health, physical health or over-all wellbeing, Matt guides his clients in finding the strategies that take them in the direction they truly want to go whilst handling the challenges that life can bring. With previous lived experience with alcohol, drug abuse, anxiety and depression, Matt has utilised many health and wellness strategies to achieve the success he has to date and to in turn help others. For couples therapy, Matt specialises in The Gottman Method which was developed by Dr John Gottman and Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman with over 30 years of research with over 3000 couples. It is an evidence-based form of couples therapy that strives to assist couples in achieving a deeper sense of understanding, awareness, empathy, and connectedness within their relationships that ultimately leads to heightened intimacy and interpersonal growth. By combining therapeutic interventions with couples' exercises, this type of therapy helps couples identify and address the natural defences that hinder effective communication and bonding. Matt loves helping others to discover their purpose and meaning in life in line with who they authentically are as he believes this is fundamental to living a fulfilling life. He enjoys spending time in nature, discovering quirky cafes with delicious coffee, spending time with family and friends, listening to music and audiobooks and thrives when focusing on health and wellness activities such as gym, yoga, hiking, meditation, mindfulness and breathwork.

Mr Nic Paatan

Counsellor
Nic has a background in clinical pathology, biotechnology, and medical research but chose to enter the field counselling with an intense passion for journeying with people from diasporic and LGBTQIA+/Queer communities. He uses the postmodern view of counselling, using narrative, outcome-oriented, and systemic approaches through a culturally-grounded lens. Nic understands that each person's journey is unique to themselves, being influenced by their cultural communities, and he seeks to allow clients to adjust their relationship with their communities in order to obtain their desired outcomes. Nic has extensive experience working with the international student community, having facilitated mental wellbeing workshops and conversations, particularly for Higher Degree/Research students, and setting up programs and organisations to allow international students to form healthy, positive relationships with other international students and domestic students alike. He is interested in assisting international students who may face accessibility issues in seeking assistance with their mental health quality, but is also interested in taking on clients from the general public who may identify with a diasporic community or the LGBTQIA+/Queer community themselves. He is also open to supervising fellow mental health professionals, utilising the same approaches and culturally-centred foundations to facilitate growth as a counsellor.

Thalia works primarily with LGBTQIA+ and neurodivergent people, especially those navigating autism, ADHD, gender diversity, sexual diversity, and complex trauma. They’ve got experience supporting people 14 and up, though most of their work is with 18–35-year-olds. Whether you’re deep into your queer journey, just starting to wonder if you might be autistic, or anywhere in between, Thalia’s here for it. They’re particularly passionate about working with neurodivergent women, neurodivergent trans and gender-diverse people, and the broader LGBTQIA+ community. Thalia is not suitable for anyone seeking Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). What people appreciate most about Thalia is how real and intentional they are. Sessions aren’t about ticking boxes or following a rigid structure—they’re about what actually matters to you. You’re encouraged to show up exactly as you are, and if that means needing breaks, stimming, or any other accommodations, that’s totally fine. Thalia will probably be sipping a coffee and fiddling with a fidget toy while you chat. As a queer AuDHDer, Thalia brings a mix of lived experience and practical strategies into their work. They know that exploring mental health can be messy and overwhelming, so they do their best to make sessions feel safe, collaborative, and empowering. Their approach is shaped by Liberation Psychology, Mad Pride, and Compassion-Focused Therapy — frameworks that challenge stigma and centre your lived reality. Outside of sessions, Thalia loves video games, reality TV, and live music. They sometimes cook (with mixed success), enjoy a good pub trivia night, and listen to everything from metal to jazz to rap to pop. They’re also big on Japanese food, comedy shows, drinking coffee, cats, and going to the gym. Most of all, they love spending time with their close friends and partner.

Humanistic counselors see their role not as one of directing clients in how to address their problems but, rather, as one of helping clients to discover and access within themselves the restricted resources they need to solve problems on their own. Some currently preferred humanistic counseling therapies include person-centered, existential, emotion-focused, Gestalt and positive psychology. Cognitive: Cognitive counseling theories hold that people experience psychological and emotional difficulties when their thinking is out of sync with reality. When this distorted or "faulty" thinking is applied to problem-solving, the result understandably leads to faulty solutions. Cognitive counselors work to challenge their clients' faulty thinking patterns so clients are able to derive solutions that accurately address the problems they are experiencing. Currently preferred cognitive-theory-based therapies include cognitive behavior therapy, reality therapy, motivational interviewing, and acceptance and commitment therapy. Along with psycho education, support and reassurance I will regularly utilise some of the follow therapies, tailored specifically to your individual needs: ⁃ Solution Focussed ⁃ Person centred ⁃ Emotion Focussed ⁃ Strengths Based ⁃ Narrative ⁃ Cognitive Behavioural ⁃ Motivational I pride myself on creating a safe, supportive and non-judgmental counselling space for individuals to share and explore the barriers that are preventing them from living life well.
