Mr Gary Rubin

Psychologist

Gary is one of Reflection Psychology Group’s principal psychologists, and has more than 15 years of experience in the field of psychology. He works with individuals, couples and families from all backgrounds. He uses a variety of approaches that he believes will be most effective based on both the issue he is working with and the experience he has in understanding what will best suit the person he is assisting. With a great passion in Emotion Focussed Therapy, Gary believes that much of our deeper present day struggles are linked to past experiences and perhaps the unresolved or non-addressed understandings or emotions associated with them. Gary also believes that often the issues presented in counselling are rather the symptoms of the underlining issue and hence it is often ‘deeper’ therapy as opposed to ‘band-aid’ therapy that provides positive and sustainable change. Gary works with clients of all ages and feels that the ideal recipe for effective therapy is self-honesty, commitment and an authentic relationship between the therapist and client. Gary relies heavily on the combination of his knowledge and experience together with his intuition to assist people. His experience extends to group therapy, training and facilitation of individuals and corporate groups as well as the provision of individual and group peer consultation and mentoring for mental health professionals. Gary’s clients would describe him as direct and challenging but also authentic and nurturing.

Nicole Canin

Psychologist

Nicole Canin is a provisionally registered psychologist with AHPRA, with eighteen years of clinical experience. Nicole obtained her postgraduate qualifications in South Africa, where she worked as a fully registered psychologist with children and adolescents, adults, and families. Overseas psychology qualifications are only partially recognised in Australia, and therefore Nicole is required to undertake the transitional program for overseas qualified psychologists to gain full registration as a psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner's Association. During this transitional period, she will be working under the supervision of one of our senior clinical psychologists, who is a Psychology Board of Australia Board Approved Supervisor. For the past ten years, Nicole has developed particular skills in supporting families with infants and young children. She knows how challenging taking care of young children can be, especially when they are struggling in some way.  She is excited about the potential for change during this stage of life, recognising that often if one can identify an issue earlier on, one can make significant long-lasting psychological shifts. Nicole's extensive training enables her to address issues such as prenatal anxiety, postnatal depression, and challenges with bonding, as well as assisting with symptoms such as separation anxiety, enuresis and temper tantrums. Nicole is also passionate about working with parents to support their children’s development. She offers tailored parental guidance, helping parents to understand their children and how often minor adjustments in parenting can promote self-esteem and emotional regulation. Nicole's PhD focused on supporting parents with premature infants. Her knowledge and skills in this area allow her to promote sensitive caregiving by helping parents to understand the developmental capacities and vulnerabilities of these fragile infants. This guidance often allows infants to settle into their post-hospital environment a little easier. In addition to her experience with young children and families, Nicole enjoys working with older children and adults; particularly for those who would like to facilitate change or overcome difficult situations in life. In her work, Nicole draws on psychodynamic theory, systems theory, attachment theory, cognitive-behavioural techniques, as well as the latest neurodevelopmental, infant and child research. Nicole’s clients would describe her as insightful, caring, warm, authentic and dedicated.
