MD is a Clinical Psychology Registrar and an Australian Research Council M.Phil./Ph.D. Scholar at the University of Sydney. Born in Vietnam and raised across Australia and the United States, MD’s journey into Psychology was shaped by a profound observation of how history, war, and migration sculpt the human psyche. Having lived and practised in five countries, he brings a global perspective to The Psychology Alley, rooted in cultural humility and a scientist-practitioner lens.
MD’s path was inspired by his family’s history of navigating inherited trauma and the complexities of dual heritage. Witnessing the intersection of displacement and mental health stigma within his own community motivated him to pursue Clinical Psychology as a means of fostering systemic change. This background fuels his commitment to supporting those whose distress is shaped by broader social structures or the experience of being "othered."
Beyond the clinic, MD is a researcher-in-training at the University of Sydney. His current research explores the cognitive drivers of mental health stigma, essentialism, and personality vulnerabilities. This scientist-practitioner lens ensures that the therapy MD provides is grounded in the latest psychological science and a deep understanding of how we categorise human distress.
To maintain his own balance, MD immerses himself in the arts and mindfulness. He is a lover of classical music and a frequent visitor to the Sydney Opera House. He also practises Zen calligraphy and is an aspiring photographer, often found exploring Sydney’s natural landmarks with his Fujifilm camera. He genuinely believes that finding beauty in the tactile and the present is as vital to health as any clinical intervention.
MD is fluent in Vietnamese and is passionate about providing culturally resonant care to the Asian-Australian community.
