Overview

Dr James Heaney is a New Zealand-born psychiatrist who has trained and worked across Queensland, New South Wales and New Zealand in a wide range of psychiatric settings, including community, inpatient, addiction and forensic psychiatry. James enjoys working with adults from all walks of life, particularly professionals, parents and individuals navigating periods of transition or striving to improve their mental health and wellbeing. He has experience supporting adults with a broad range of mental health concerns, including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma, neurodivergence and addiction. He also has particular interests in psychotherapy and emerging psychiatric therapies. James believes in providing evidence-based, individualised care tailored to each person’s unique circumstances, values and goals. Prior to his medical career, James completed undergraduate degrees in Exercise Physiology and Finance at the University of Auckland. During this time, he lived and studied internationally in Montreal, Paris and Tokyo, and gained experience working in the corporate sector. These experiences gave him an appreciation of the challenges faced by people balancing demanding careers, family life and personal wellbeing, and continue to shape his practical and holistic approach to patient care. Away from the consulting room, James enjoys spending time with his young family, playing touch rugby and learning languages. He speaks conversational French, Portuguese and Japanese, and is currently learning Dutch. James believes that mental health care is about more than simply reducing symptoms—it is also about helping people lead meaningful and fulfilling lives, improving their wellbeing and helping them realise their potential. He values building strong therapeutic relationships and strives to create a warm, respectful and collaborative environment where patients feel heard, understood and empowered to make lasting positive changes.
