Katherine is an occupational therapist with 13 years experience in paediatric and child & youth mental health settings in Melbourne, the UK and Brisbane. Her therapy style is based on using the child or young person's interests and creativity to guide therapy. Her most recent experience is working with young people and their families with anxiety, depression and trauma backgrounds. This might include difficulties with managing big feelings, conflict in the family, social issues and problems with self esteem. Initial meetings include information gathering, with exploration of the young person's passions and interests. Sensory assessment and interventions might be used to find ways of self regulating through movement, breath work and sensory tools. Katherine also has experience with a wide range of developmental conditions such as ASD and ADHD. She is skilled in using standardised assessments, which can determine where a child is progressing in relation to peers of their age in regards to strength and motor coordination. Sensory assessment can also provide a wider understanding of how the child responds to information in their environment, which can affect concentration and the ability to self regulate. She may also focus on how difficulties in these areas might impact on every day skills such as handwriting, dressing or eating. Children can also be observed in the clinic and home environment to determine their needs for assistance with everyday skills. Katherine values the importance of parents and the family dynamic for the young person's well being, which is integral to her practice. Katherine is a trained yoga teacher and has a passion for teaching young women about the importance of being able to move through feeling states through the use of movement and the breath. She has developed a group for teenage girls focusing on yoga and art work that provides safe and contained space to connect.
